Webdesigns & Computer Services take no responsability if you
decide to try doing this yourself.. These documents are just a guide.
Only do this if you know what you
are doing.
To add a second hard drive to your
computer here's what to do. On the back of the drive you will see
a set of pins simular to the pic below:

(MA)
This stands for Master and (SL)
this stands for slave and finally (CL)this
stands for cable select, for the time being please ignore the cable
select, we are only interested in the master and slave options.
The following procedure explains
how to add the two drives to the same controller socket on the motherboard.
Okay, now you know what to look
for on the back of your hard drives, check the drive you already
have in your computer and make sure the two pins for master are
connected with a jumper. Then look at the new / second drive and
make sure that the two pins are connected as the slave. Before adding
the drive to the computer case make sure that the ribbon cable will
reach both drives, add the second drive to the computer and screw
it to the case then connect the ribbon cable and the power cable.
Now close the case and start the
computer, when the computer starts the memory check, press the DEL
key to access the BIOS. Once into the BIOS go into the standard
settings and set the hard drive options to auto, exit and save the
BIOS and while the computer restarts, watch to see if the new drive
is recognized, if it is you are now ready to partition it otherwise
you have done something wrong like plugged the ribbon cable in the
wrong way round or the power cable is not connected properly or
there is simply something wrong with the drive.
To make this easier for all Windows
95/98/NT and 2k operating systems I suggest you use a boot disk
then put the boot disk in the computer and turn it on or restart
it.
When the computer reaches the A:/>
type fdisk and press enter you will then be asked if you want to
create a partition larger than 512mb type 'y' for yes and press
enter.
When the menu appears choose option
4 "display disk partition" to find out which is the new
drive then press escape to return to the main menu. Choose option
5 "change current disk" this selects the new disk for
you to work on then choose to partition it as you would like for
example as one drive or as several drives.
Once you have done this press escape
to exit fdisk and restart the computer, once restarted you can then
format the drive with the command format d: or e: whatever the drive
letter is of your new drive. Please be careful not to format your
c: drive as you will lose all of your data. And that's it, |
